Bits and I met at Minneapolis Animal Care and Control in January of 2009. It was basically love at first sight. As part of the intake team of A Rotta Love Plus, I was at the facility looking for a new program dog. When I saw her, Bits was a sight. She had just given birth to puppies so she was full with milk. She was underweight and had several large bald patches on her back. Something told me that this dog was special. When her five-day hold at animal control was up, I took Mo-Bits into my home as a foster. She fit in with the rest of the family like she had always been a part of it and it became clear pretty quickly that she was home.
Bits is a gentle, sweet, and goofy dog. And it was only too apparent that this dog’s mission in life was to be an ambassador for her breed, as well as share her gentleness, sweetness, and goofiness, with others as a therapy dog. This was not only evident to me: in fact, the first time we took the therapy dog test, we failed. We failed because I was a hot mess of nerves. The tester pulled me aside and said, “This dog was meant to be a therapy dog. Do your work, calm down, and bring her back.” That is exactly what we did.
In our work together as a therapy team I have witnessed firsthand the impact a dog can have in so many capacities. It is a blessing in so many ways to be a part of it.
